Google announced on October 29 that the Gemini app can now create, preview and edit files inside the chat. You can ask for a document, spreadsheet, slide deck or PDF, see it in Gemini, type edits in a full-screen view or ask Gemini to rework it, then open it in Google Docs, Sheets or Slides. Google says on its Workspace Updates blog that it’s live now for everyone who has the Gemini app.
What’s new
- Slide decks: draft outlines or slides, preview the layout, edit, then open in Google Slides or download as PPTX or PDF.
- Spreadsheets: generate trackers and tables from a prompt and open them in Google Sheets.
- Documents and PDFs: draft Google Docs, PDFs, Markdown, LaTeX or TXT files, edit them inline and upload them to Drive.
- Platforms: PDF preview and editing work on web and mobile. Documents, spreadsheets, slides, Markdown, TXT and code are web only for now.
Google says the feature covers all Workspace customers, Workspace Individual subscribers and personal Google accounts, in every language the Gemini app supports, on both Rapid and Scheduled Release domains.
Who it affects
Any team on Google Workspace that already has the Gemini app turned on. The detail admins should notice is that Google lists no separate admin control for this feature. If the Gemini app is on for your users, they can generate files with it today. The only lever is turning the Gemini app on or off.
Our take
This is useful for first drafts: a proposal outline, a job tracker, a client report skeleton. It cuts the copy and paste step between chat and Docs. We’d still have a person check every number and claim before a file leaves the building. If you run Workspace, confirm who has the Gemini app enabled and that your team knows which client data can go into it. Then pick one recurring document and test whether the Gemini draft saves real time.
