Reddit plans to make most of its site logged-in only. The company announced the shift with its third-quarter 2026 results on October 29, saying it will start testing in select markets outside the US this quarter. CEO Steve Huffman told analysts, “This is a test, but we are going to make this transition.”
The reason is search. Reddit said search referrals fell sharply in October, and Huffman said on the earnings call that Google’s AI Mode “does not drive traffic.” For small businesses that get found through Reddit recommendation threads on Google, this is worth watching. It’s too early to change much.
What’s new
- Reddit will move to a primarily logged-in experience. Testing starts in Q4 2026 in some markets outside the US, with no date given for a global rollout, according to TechCrunch’s report on the results.
- Reddit told investors that search referrals dropped by more than a million on average in October, and warned that daily users could fall next quarter if the trend holds.
- Huffman said AI Overviews and AI Mode push organic results further down the page and that Reddit won’t plan on Google referrals coming back.
- Reddit says a logged-out front page still matters and that it’s rebuilding its incognito browsing option. Huffman wrote that the line between logged-in and logged-out access is still being worked out.
Who it affects
Plenty of buyers add “reddit” to their searches to find honest opinions on contractors, software and local services. If your business gets recommended in those threads, part of that reach comes from people who read without an account. A login wall could cut that audience, starting in whichever markets Reddit tests first.
Reddit hasn’t said whether Google will still index threads behind the wall, and we haven’t seen a comment from Google. Brands that run Reddit ads are in a different spot. Logged-in users are the ones who vote, comment and click, and they give Reddit more signals for targeting.
Our take
We wouldn’t move budget yet. The test hasn’t started, the markets aren’t named and the indexing question is open. What we’re telling clients is to treat Reddit mentions as a bonus and put the answers buyers look for on pages you own. Check Search Console for queries where clicks fell while impressions held, since that pattern often means a forum thread or an AI answer is taking the click. Then write a plain, specific page that answers that question on your site.
